About the lecture

Para-clinical examinations are branches of laboratory medical sciences, which provide services for patients without direct involvement in care. This lecture offers a quick introduction in para-clinical methods that use Physics (pressure, ultrasound, bio-electricity, x-rays, gamma-rays, magnetic resonance). The lecture is designed to especially help the students that did not studied Physics, providing concise definitions and explanations of the laws of physics involved in each lecture chapter. The lecture is presented in English by Dr. A. Iftime. The topics covered are listed below:

1. HEMODYNAMICS AND ITS MEASUREMENTS 
(topics: measurement of blood pressure - units for measurement of pressure; physical factors used to measure the blood pressure indirectly; The correct method for taking arterial blood pressure with a sphygmomanometer ; frequent errors; precision of manual sphygmomanometers vs. digital ones)

2. ULTRASOUNDS AND THEIR MEDICAL APPLICATIONS
(topics: acoustics; general notions about ultrasounds; how they are produced; acoustic pressure and tissue impedance; therapeutic effects and side effects)

3. ECHOGRAPHY (MEDICAL ULTRASOUND IMAGING)
(topics: ultrasound imaging principle; resolution limit, errors; contrast substances in ultrasound imaging; Doppler effects and its application to medical imaging; side effects)

4. RECORDING OF ELECTRICAL SIGNALS FROM WHOLE ORGANS AND TISSUES
(topics: electrical potentials at the tissue / organ level; electrical potential waves, sign conventions used in biological electrical recordings; electrode placement; types of electrodes; overview of electrocardiogram, electroencephalogram, electromyogram; electrical noises in the recordings)

5. ELECTRICAL CONDUCTION IN THE BODY AND IN THE HEART
(topics: electrical conduction in the heart; fibrillation; electrical defibrillation; pacemakers; electrical conduction in the body; in the axons; body electrical impedance measurement)

6. X-RAY AND GAMMA-RAY IMAGING
(topics: X-ray properties, uses, generation; X-Ray imaging principle; gamma-ray imaging overview; short and long-term effects of X-and gamma ray imaging)

7. TOMOGRAPHIC IMAGING
(physics topics: tomographic principle; X-Ray tomography principle; conical tomography; differences between tomographic principles; long-term effects)
